Claire has always seemed to have more 'issues' in life: like going to the dentist and having 10 cavities, where as the other two have had none, or getting an abscess tooth in the middle of no-whereville Utah with no pharmacies or dentists around for 3 days, or always having phantom pains, of which I'm not sure if they're just 'attention getter's' or growing pains. But with all of these small dilemma's in life she has always handled them with little fear and I think a little sense of pride of what she can overcome. ( We like to call her Thomasina ). Anyways that's why I knew if there was any child I would ever have to take to go get stitches spur of the moment I would definitely want Claire to be the one. She doesn't let the fear of the unknown get the best of her.
Yesterday right after school she was running in the kitchen with her socks on and, by the picture above, obviously bit it good. Her chin was gushing out blood for a little while but stopped fairly soon after, and after getting things under a bit of control I immediately called Tommy to tell him I needed to take Claire to get stitches. His advice to me...."Just bandage it up, things like that heal nicely." I kept on telling him it was way too big and deep to do that. These pictures are from my cell phone, since I was trying to prove my case to him that I wasn't being the overprotective mom and sent him some actual proof to have him agree with me. Unfortunately he didn't get them. Anyways after about 5 minutes of him saying "She'll be fine." and me saying "No, I really think she needs stitches." he finally said "If you really think it's that bad then take her in." Whew! Why I needed that from him I don't know, but I did. So off we went to urgent care. Where, on the way, now the overprotective dad was kicking in, calling worried about how Claire would be able to handle getting stitches in her chin, and not wanting her to be upset. With Claire I could confidently tell him that she is my tough cookie and she would do just fine.
Here she is waiting for the numbing medicine to kick in, other than right when she fell at home she didn't cry again. Thanks so much to Christy for watching the other girls on the spot. I was so glad when we were waiting and waiting in the little room that they weren't there....trying to entertain 3 kids in a room with 4 bare walls isn't easy, I've tried it before. So as we're waiting Claire was asking "How much longer?" and I told her I didn't know but I was telling her thanks for being so patient and that I was glad that Alli and Ainsley weren't there because they would probably acting like crazy monkeys by then. She looked at me calmly and said in her sweet little voice "I wouldn't do that mom, this is a serious moment." I had to agree, but have been smiling to myself when ever I think of her saying that because I don't think I have ever heard her talk so grown up in my life.
Anyways an hour and half later, here is my tough cookie smiling so we could send another picture to Dad and show him how brave she's been and how good her 3 stitches look. I'm so proud of her. She has definitely won the title of 'tough cookie' in our house.

Wow, good for Claire! I'm so impressed!
oh my gosh! Poor thing! Way to go tough girl! :)
Good job for being so brave Claire, the kids have been quite worried about you!
That looks horrible, I would have hated to see that up close. Just kidding! I am glad everything worked out and Matthew is excited to have matching scars with Claire.
Ouch! Claire and I are in the same boat. I had more than my fair share of that stuff. And I am pretty sure my dad responded the same way to my injuries at first too...gearhart dads, you gotta love em'.
Claire...you are AWESOME!!! You really are tough! I miss being able to see you at work stations! You're such a little doll! Give yourself a great big hug for me!!!
Amy
Claire, you are one tough girl. Good job. I think you must take after Auntie Tamzen.:) In the picture of her gash, you could think that that was Tommy. Who knew she looked so much like her dad from the nose down!
