Family Reunion: Torrey,Utah

My whole life I have been going to Torrey, Utah for an annual reunion. I remember when I was young, camping in a big 10 man tent (I am the youngest of 8) washing my hair in a water thicket and playing around the campground. How my parents had the patience and will to pack us and all the gear up to camp, I don't know, but I do have many fond memories of being there and listening to great thunder storms and having the rain pelt down on our tent. ( I wonder if my mom felt as I would now, and think, "Oh Great! That means muddy kids.") As I got older we went there a little more sporadically and less of the kids went, but I definitely remember the the time when I was only14, and my dad and I were the only ones from our family who went. I drove on the state highways for long periods of time and of course loved it. :) I thought I was hot stuff, and not to mention when I finally did turn 16 I did get a 100% on my driving test.
My great, great grandparents settled this little town there, built a church and explored the red cliffs (now known as Capital Reef National Park). My Great, Great Grandpa found many artifacts, and I probably should post about them, because they are quite amazing.
I am so happy that Thomas has fallen in love with a place that brings back so many memories to me and am so glad that he and my children will all have a special place in their hearts for a little town called Torrey, UT.
Being 7 months pregnant I didn't accompany my family on any hikes this year, but I was so impressed that my tough little girls gladly went with their Daddy on them.
Thomas and my family went on a 6 mile hike to Calf Creek Falls!

Taking a rest and a picture of course.

This is Calf Creek Falls, it's about a 3 mile hike in. The girls thought that it was great because they got to wear their swimsuits and goswimming mid-way through.

I am really impressed that the girls made it, and that Thomas made it without strangling them. Just imagine hiking with 3 girls, who sometimes, I think, have whining as their favorite past time. :)

Along the main street in Torrey is a little canal, I used to spend hours in it when I was younger and the adults were busy talking across the street at the family reunion at the church.

Almost all of the girl, Rentz Cousins, hanging their feet into the canal. Ainsley, Alli, Kennedi, Jaicee, and Claire. There was a fun rope swing on one of the trees and the girls had a great time.

Ainsley getting her turn.

Alli hanging on tight!
Claire 'free-styling' it!

A look down the way.

Another favorite past time in Torrey is shooting, here arethe girls, with earplugs in, getting ready for the action.

When I was younger my dad would take us shooting all of the time. I remember one time in Torrey my dad was helping me aim a pistol, he said to me "Don't shoot until I say okay. Okay?" BANG! I shot. He did say okay....my poor dad spent months picking lead slivers out of his hands. It amazing that he still likes to go shooting with anyone.
Uncle Shawn letting Alli have a try on a 22. ( I don't really know what that means, just so you know, I am just trying to be cool.)
Tommy getting ready to go. Look at that stance.
The shooting range, seems like shame to be shooting beneath these beautiful red rocks, but it did allow for some great echoing. Props to Lisa and Jakelle for shooting cans of shaving cream, that was awesome! The boys had a great time shooting a TV that Tommy had saved for 6 months to bring up, watermelons, and some posters of some beauty queen. (They did quite the job on her, giving her beauty marks, and busted up teeth). Oh and not to forget Tommy's little tradition he shared with the family; dry ice bombs, there is a little lame video of it below if you're curious. It sure doesn't do them justice. :)

We had our family picnics at my favorite park of all times, Fruita.

The girls chatting.

I know, we look lovely!!!!

This is my Aunt Celeste whom I was named after. This reunion is the only time I see her, but it's great to know that she always knows who I am and I always know who she is.

We went for a walk in Fruita and there is a stream and camp ground there, they also had a little pavilion and so the kids had a great time giving us about an hours worth of an impromptu talent show. A little taste of the talents are also posted on a video below.
Kennedi and Alli showing us their amazing nose talent.
And Ainsley showing us her unbelievable 'staring atnose talent.' I just might pay money to see both. :)

That is awesome, Jolene! I wish we had family traditions like that to keep up--we've never been campers, and family reunions are always weird to me because I don't know anybody but my immediate cousins. Where is Torrey? I've never heard of it.

Wow, what a time...the swimming in the middle of the hikes looks cool to me too! Reunions and camping are fun once you get over all the packing and unpacking, eh?

That is a great story about your grandparents. I need you to write a book. I would be there at midnight to buy it. Tammi

I had fun reliving the trip through your pictures! The girls were so sad to leave and made us promise to get there a day earlier next time so we can go on the long waterfall hike!
