Picture

When I was down in CA visiting my sister Debbie she gave me this letter my mom had written to her family after her birthday. I loved that my mom put down specifics of her life, and absolutely loved the fact that she shared a poem my dad had written her while they were dating. It is so interesting to be able to picture your parents in a way you have never seen them, in this case a little corny and painfully falling in love. Below is a transcript of the letter and the poem my dad wrote.

January 15, 1964

Dear Family,

Thank you so much for the birthday card and money. I gave ten dollars to grandma and six I used to register for the second semester of school. As of now I haven't spent the rest but I'll let you know when I do. I got a job Monday morning (my birthday) I work at Kentucky Fried Chicken as a counter girl. I work 5 days a week from 4:30 to 9:30 for $1.25 plus I have my library job. maybe now I can earn a little money for college next year.

I had a wonderful birthday thanks to Noel. Saturday night five couples got together and went bowling. (I almost beat Noel- I got 122 and he got 134.) Then later we all went to Noels for "refreshments"-much to my surprise it was a birthday party for me!! Noel had even baked the cake himself-it said Happy Birthday Judy and it had a big sunshine in the middle because he's always calling me "sunshine."

Noel also wrote me a poem for my birthday. Its the most wonderful and beautiful present I have ever gotten-I've enclosed a copy so that you could read it.

Sunday we went to his brothers farewell. He's going to the Southwest Indian Mission. Karen gave me a beautiful blouse for my birthday. Grandma gave me some underwear. Thank you girls so much for the money. I really appreciated it.

Love,

Judy

"Judy" by Noel Rentz

Why yes, Judy is a common name.

No not another character could be the same

The thing I like best about Judy

Is not that she isn't always fruity,

But that she spreads smiles and sunshine all along the way,

to make many more lives happier each day;

The rare kind of person who expects the most out of everybody,

Always treating people not as they are but as if they were somebody.

Yes, this girl with yellow hair

when treated unruly in never unfair

Who embraces all righteousness and truth

Will never grow old, but always remain a youth.

And enthusiastic as all get up and tar nation

Yet always as fresh as a newly picked carnation.

How nice it would be if the world were the same

As thoughtful and unselfish which is her middle name.

When the Lord's spirit touches her she is always cheerful,

Her eyes light up but are very tearful.

It melts my heart to see that one,

could be so close to the Father and the Son.

To see that pure gleam and twinkle in her eye

My thankful association will I treasure after I die.

Discouragement, trial, despair, never a tasting frown

You know someday as her blessing says she'll receive her Godly crown.

To Someday be with God a Queen

To represent love, peace and serene.

Though these glories to me seem endlessly

To others they may not even be.

Different from others as she may be,

From what I know now she's alright for me!

That's so neat. I wish I had something like this from my parents. My mom threw away all of her love letters from my dad when they moved. Sad!

That is so sweet. What a treasure! Your mom sounds like you. A fun, young soul. She passed that on to her youngest daughter and you passed it onto your youngest daughter. Ainsley is just like you. I love that picture too!

So neat! I loved the poem and the letter. And the little things about what she did with her money and how much she made were extremely interesting. Must remember to add those things to my journal! Thanks for the share!

What a great post! And I agree with Erika...things your mom took the time to write down are so interesting to read. I need to do better about that so my kids can read things about me and my life...and I will for sure keep all of my love letters! =) What a treasure!
